Despite the scale of this problem, most survivors never receive care or justice. Stigma, shame, and lack of information prevent 70% of survivors from seeking crisis care or reporting their assault to law enforcement. Without support, many survivors are at risk for depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and chronic health challenges. And with just 25 in 1,000 rapes leading to a criminal conviction, communities become less safe.
As the region’s only Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Center, One Place Family Justice Center is responsible for providing life-saving crisis services to more than 475,000 residents spread across nine mostly rural counties. Today, our greatest challenge is reaching the seven in ten survivors who need our help but do not know cost-free, confidential care is available to them.
What One Place is Doing to Promote Community Safety
To strengthen the health and safety of central Alabama, One Place has developed a strategic communication program that engages communities through neighborhood outreach, expands awareness through traditional TV and radio, and reaches younger, more vulnerable populations through targeted social and digital media.
By building trust, reducing stigma, and fostering two-way communications, One Place will:
- Empower more survivors to seek care.
- Increase confidential crime reporting.
- Help law enforcement stop repeat offenders.
