In a given year, as many as 10 million Americans are affected by domestic violence attributed to 1.2 million incidents of victimization.

Domestic violence, sexual assault and rape have much in common. Like sexual assault and rape, domestic violence is a common occurrence in our community, under reported to law enforcement, and survivors suffer for a lifetime because they were unable to access basic recovery services. And there is one more commonality – domestic violence destroys public safety at the grassroots.

When people, especially children, witness violence in the home, it normalizes aggression and victimization. Research shows a strong link between rates of domestic violence and other forms of violence within a community. So, it comes as no surprise that communities with high rates of domestic violence likely experience higher rates of other forms of violence including child maltreatment, gun violence, and homicide. Similarly, domestic violence shares links to substance use rates, poor mental health outcomes, poverty and increases in homeliness while draining police and ER resources already overburdened.

Not all nonprofit service programs are designed the same way or generate the same success. One Place’s domestic violence Case Management program focuses on walking individuals through the change process in order to break the generational cycle of family abuse. With each person helped to exit domestic violence the heart of the community is strengthened.
